Laser tracking responds to the slightest hand movement with extraordinary
accuracy. It does do on virtually any surface- white or black- solid or pattern-
shiny or matte. Laser illumination tracks flawlessly on the high-gloss surfaces
that LED-based mice simply can't negotiate. There surfaces include lacquered
tabletops- glazed ceramic tile- un-textured plastic- metal surfaces- photo
paper- laminate countertops- opaque glass- and more (Laser still may not track
on mirrored or clear surfaces- such as windowpane glass).
The optical sensor reads the image at a rate of about 1-500 times per second.
The problem with this is sometimes differences in similar patterns are not
easily distinguishable because of the lower resolution and power of the LED.
Therefore it compromises the tracking accuracy depending on the surface (i.e..
certain mouse pads with certain patterns/surface textures). Laser is based on
the same idea except it uses a narrow beam of light that is reflected off the
surface producing an image with greater contrast that is captured by a higher
resolution sensor (1600dpi) at a higher rate- of up to 6000-7000 times per
second. Because of this advancement- laser can track where optical can't.
